Our History
Ioannis Mitsis, a lover of good food (ofto, klefiko, souvla etc.) and good wine (mavro, sterko, moschato, ambelisimo etc.), always got his wine from friends and relatives who were producers from the nearby traditional “wine villages” of Gerakies, Polystipos, Kannavia, Pitsilia, Marathasa, and others.
An old authentic story (from yesterday to today)
Around 1960 in Cyprus, Grandfather Giannis’ friend, Tilemachos, who came from Marathasa, was hosted in the prosperous village of Zodia, where Giannis lived. Tilemachos went from door to door selling wine from his small barrels, measured out by the karto (demijohn). But that year, he had brought more wine than the villagers wished to buy. Unable to sell it and already struggling financially, he became deeply worried.
As Christmas approached and Tilemachos prepared to return to his village, Grandfather Giannis, wishing to ease his friend’s anxiety, decided to buy all the remaining wine. When the villagers asked him what he intended to do with such a quantity, he already had a plan in mind.
After consulting experienced winemakers, studying numerous books, and relying on the sharp mind that always distinguished him, he realised that the unique indigenous grape varieties of the region—Mavro, Xynisteri, Giannoudi, and Maratheftiko—could produce exceptional, aromatic wine vinegar ideal for every household use. And so he set to work. Beginning in 1961, he developed standardised recipes for crafting high-quality, authentic wine vinegar. He passed these recipes on to his family, and they have been carefully preserved ever since as a treasured secret.
Today
Today, almost sixty years later, the third generation of the family not only preserves unchanged the knowledge and recipes received as a true legacy from Grandfather Giannis, but continues with the same passion and dedication, adding new products such as extra virgin olive oil.
Having developed an ultra-modern facility on the border of the prefectures of Thessaloniki and Halkidiki, in one of the most important wine-producing regions of the country, MITSIS & MITSIS GROUP S.A. operates in the food sector using the most advanced techniques, offering excellent products of unmatched quality and unique nutritional value.
